English: Supplementary Map of the Five Capital Areas 한국어: 19세기 후반 지도인 경조오부도의 모습이다. 지도의 왼쪽 중앙 부근에서 홍대 일대에 위치한 '세교리(細橋里)'와 '와우산(卧牛山)'을 찾을 수 있다. 현재의 홍익대학교 일대에는 '송정'이라는 봉우리에서 흘러내린다 하여 '송정내'라 불린 이 개천에는 작은 돌다리 2개가 있었다. 사람들은 이 작은 돌다리들을 '잔다리'라고 불렀는데, 잔다리를 한자로 옮기면 '세교(細橋)‘가 된다. 2개의 돌다리 중 동쪽이자 와우산자락 높은 곳에 위치한 잔다리를 ’윗잔다리‘ 또는 ’동세교(東細橋)‘라고 하였다. 그보다 아래쪽에 위치한 서쪽의 잔다리를 ’아랫잔다리’ 또는 ‘서세교(西細橋)’라고 하였다. 오늘날 동세교 일대는 동교동이 되었고, 서세교 일대는 서교동이 되었다.
잔다리와 더불어 홍익대학교 일대의 입지와 관련해 함께 언급해야 하는 것이 바로 홍익대학교 캠퍼스가 자리 잡고 있는 ’와우산‘이다. 홍익대학교 캠퍼스 뒤편에 위치한 와우산은 해발 105m의 작은 산이다. ’와우(臥牛)‘ 즉, ’누운 소‘라는 이름은 이 산이 북동쪽에서 서남쪽으로 길게 자리 잡고 있어서, 서강 쪽에서 바라보면 마치 소가 누워 있는 모습과 흡사하기 때문에 붙었다. |
