Air Transport Squadron 2 (Indonesian: Skadron Udara 2 Angkut, Skadud 2) is the oldest transport aircraft squadron owned by the Indonesian Air Force and is under the control of Air Wing 1, Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base which is headquartered in East Jakarta.[1] Since its formation until now, the 2nd Air Squadron has had its home base at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base, with the strength of the C-47 Dakota (1950s), Ilyushin Il-14, Avia-14 (1970s), Fokker 27 Troopship (1976 - 2012), CN-235 (1993 - 2019) and C-295M (2012 - present).[2]

The squadron, which has the symbol of the Flying Horse, was established based on KASAU's order Number 0493/PR/KASAU/50 dated August 1 1950. Air Squadron 2 was inaugurated with a fleet of legendary American-made C-47 Dakota aircraft from the 50s to mid 70s. -an. At the beginning of 1955, Marshal Kliment E Voroshilov (Soviet Union Military Chief) donated an Ilyushin Il-14 Crate transport aircraft as a sign of friendship between the two countries, and several Ilyushin Il-14 aircraft followed, including the Avia-14 (Czechoslovak variant) completing the force of Air Squadron 2 accompanying the C-47 Dakota. In the 70s, the Indonesian Air Force leadership renewed its fleet of replacement transport aircraft for the C-47 Dakota by purchasing seven Fokker F-27 TS (Troop Ship) aircraft from the Netherlands. Gradually the seven aircraft were imported and the first time was on September 7 1976 with registration number T-2701 until the last was T-2708 in 1977. This Fokker F-27 TS aircraft strengthened the ranks of Air Squadron 2 until early 2012, and subsequently it was decided not to fly it again (Grounded). Entering the era of the 90s, Air Squadron 2 crewed six CN-235 aircraft which were produced by the nation's subsidiary PT Dirgantara Indonesia (formerly: IPTN). On January 12 1993, the first CN-235 aircraft arrived at Air Squadron 2, until the total number was 6 aircraft in 1995. In 2007 Air Squadron 2 received 1 additional CN-235 aircraft to increase its strength to date.

As time went by and the age of the Fokker F-27 TS aircraft which was more than 30 years old, in July 2012 the Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Air Force, Marshal TNI Imam Sufa'at ordered 4 pilots from the Air Squadron 2 Wing 1 of Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base and 18 technicians from various ranks in the Indonesian Air Force to learn how to operate and maintain the C-295 M aircraft at Airbus Military Seville, Spain. The Indonesian Air Force is planned to receive 9 C-295 M aircraft, in accordance with the purchase contract between the Indonesian Ministry of Defense and PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PT. DI) to strengthen the strength of Alutsista in its ranks. The C-295 M aircraft is an aircraft made by Airbus Military which will collaborate in the production process with PT Dirgantara Indonesia and will gradually be produced by Airbus Military and will be assembled together at the PT DI Bandung facility later. A total of 9 aircraft are planned to be completed and handed over in stages to the Indonesian Air Force starting at the end of 2012 until 2014. The first two aircraft, with registration numbers A-2901 and A-2902, were flown from Seville, Spain on September 24 2012 and are planned will arrive at Husein Satranegara Air Base (PT DI) on September 30 2012,[3] with each aircraft manned by 2 pilots from Airbus Military and 1 pilot from PT DI. The C-295 M aircraft is the latest generation tactical medium airlifter aircraft which uses a full glass cockpit, digital avionics and is fully compatible with night vision goggles (NVG). The C-295 M is a military version of the medium transport aircraft that is reliable in its class. The C-295 M is capable of carrying a total of 9 tons of cargo or approximately 71 personnel. This aircraft is also capable of flying to a height of 25,000 feet with a maximum cruising speed of 260 knots (480 km/h) and can be flown and controlled safely and very well at low speeds of up to 110 knots (203 km/h). By using 2 Pratt & Whitney Canada Turboprop Engines (PW 127G) this aircraft is capable of taking off and landing on a short runway (STOL/Short Take Off & Landing) of 670 m / 2,200 ft with a certain weight. The capabilities of the C-295 M aircraft are considered very suitable and ideal for the tasks and missions carried out by Air Squadron 2. These include carrying out personnel and logistics transportation, troop and logistics drops, Air Medical Evacuation, limited Air Patrol, as well as military assignments and other humanity missions.[4] In 2018, the Indonesian Air Force ordered 1 unit of CN-295 MPA for maritime patrol needs and it was received in 2019.

Base Transfer[edit]

In line with the revitalization policy of Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base, Jakarta, several units were temporarily moved to Husein Sastranegara Air Base, Bandung. Several units moved to Bandung, namely 2nd Air Squadron, 31st Air Squadron and 021st Engineering Squadron. Revitalization of Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base, to improve aviation security and safety. The TNI Commander was accompanied by Kasau, and his entourage also inspected several facilities and office facilities used by 31st Air Squadron, 2nd Air Squadron and 021st Engineering Squadron.
