LibreELEC (short for Libre Embedded Linux Entertainment Center) is a non-profit fork of OpenELEC open-source software appliance, a dedicated Linux-based Just enough operating system (embedded Linux distribution) for the Kodi (formerly XBMC) media player software for HTPC (Home theater PC) which is used as a 10-foot user interface frontend for use with televisions and remote controls (instead of a classic desktop environment for Linux).

This fork of OpenELEC was originally announced in March 2016 as a split from the OpenELEC team after "creative differences", taking most of its active developers at the time to join the new LibreELEC project.[2][3][4][5] This is a conservative fork of the OpenELEC project with a stronger focus on pre-release testing and post-release change management.[5]

Description[edit]

LibreELEC provides a complete media center software suite that comes with a pre-configured version of Kodi and third-party addons with retro video game console emulators and DVR plugins.

LibreELEC is a small and very fast-booting Linux based distribution, primarily designed to boot from some kind of solid-state storage, similar to the older XBMCbuntu (formerly XBMC Live) distribution that it was designed to replace, and specifically targets constraint hardware appliance based setup such as on an ARM SoCs appliance box or minimum computer based on Intel x86-64 processor with graphics and video acceleration.

Forks of LibreELEC[edit]

Since its inception, the growth and popularity of LibreELEC has in turn lead to the project's developers encouraging others to fork and reuse the LibreELEC code and packages as a more generic embedded Linux appliance operating system. As such there are now several additional open-source forks (and derivatives) that also use the LibreELEC codebase, most of which are specialized for either some specific hardware platform or different appliance purposes. Like example:

- CoreELEC, an embedded Linux distro with Kodi frontend which has the same purpose as LibreELEC (and OpenELEC) but is specifically made and optimized for hardware based on ARM-based SoCs from Amlogic.

- Lakka, an embedded Linux distro for retro gaming that uses "Libretro" (formerly libsnes) framework/API as backend and RetroArch as a frontend UI instead of Kodi.

- RetroELEC, another embedded Linux distro for retro gaming that also uses "Libretro" framework/API as backend however is relies on "EmulationStation" as a frontend UI.

- EmuELEC, embedded Linux appliance distro for retro emulation on Amlogic based platforms. Based on CoreELEC and Lakka with tidbits from Batocera. Primarly uses EmulationStation as frontend UI but also contationa some standalone game emulators (such as Advancemame, PPSSPP, Reicast, Amiberry and others).

- AmberELEC (formerly "351ELEC") is a fork of EmuELEC which in turn is based on a combination of CoreELEC, Lakka, and Batocera.

- AlexELEC, a JeOS fork of LibreELEC and CoreELEC with Kodi frontend.

- RasPlex, is a fork of LibreELEC that uses Plex media player client instead of Kodi.

- OSMC (also known as "OSMC.tv" short for "Open Source Media Center"), is a media center based on Kodi. Its distro is based on Debian Linux but it also reuses some code and packages from LibreELEC.

History[edit]

Because of the end of Python 2 support in 2020, LibreElec version 10 with Kodi 19 switches to Python 3. Therefore, addons created for prior versions with python 2 need to be updated by developers for Kodi 19 because python code is not backward compatible.
