Copper Beech Tree Myth[edit]

The article currently state: "A large protest was held by Portland State University students when it was announced that the tree would have to be cut down in order to accommodate the expansion. The design of the library remodel was brought back to the drawing boards to become what it is today. It wraps around the 5 story Copper Beech as a reminder to the students of PSU of its rich and determined history."

The library itself writes ( https://library.pdx.edu/about/ ): "The Branford Price Millar Library was first built in 1966 and originally consisted of a rectangular structure oriented roughly north and south along the east side of 10th Avenue. The striking architecture of the eastern portion, a convex wall of glass, was added in 1989 and reflects the environmental awareness of this Pacific Northwest university. **The eastern addition was designed to surround, rather than replace, an ancient copper beech tree.** The Copper Beech (Fagus sylvatica f. purpurea) tree in front of the Library was designated a Portland Heritage Tree by the Portland City Council in 1995. It was planted in about 1890." Another source (http://www.go2psu.org/psu-library-breakdown/) similarly states "the 1989 addition to the building was made to surround the ancient Copper Beech tree, rather than replace it. The historic tree and surrounding library symbolize PSU’s dedication to environmental awareness and preservation of the Pacific Northwest’s beauty."
