Georg Duffner about EB Garamond

The EB Garamond or Egenolff-Berner-Garamond is a free software OpenType font implementation of an Antiqua designed by Claude Garamond and matching Italic and Greek characters designed by Robert Granjon. This implementation is based directly on the Egenolff-Berner specimen printed in 1592.

Versions[edit]

First implementation[edit]

In 2011 Georg Duffner released the font under the Open Font License. Duffner based the design on a specimen printed by Egelnoff-Berner in 1592, with italic and Greek characters based on Robert Granjon's work, as well as the addition of Cyrillic characters and OpenType features such as swash italic capitals and schoolbook alternates.[1] It is intended to include multiple optical sizes, as of 2014 including fonts based on the 8 and 12 point forms on the 1592 specimen.

Second implementation[edit]

As Georg Duffner couldn't complete the bold weights for personal reasons, the project was continued by Octavio Pardo. As of 2018 this implementation has 5 weights (Regular, Medium, Semi-Bold, Bold and Extra-Bold), both in regular and italic style.[2]

Reception[edit]

It has been described as “one of the best open source fonts” by the prominent typeface designer Erik Spiekermann.[3]

Download and Embedding[edit]

The OTF- and TTF-files can be downloaded from Octavio Pardo's repository[4] and are also available for embedding on Google Fonts.
