Critical Evaluation of the Quantitative Titrimetric Determination of Acetone in a Water and Butyl Acetate Mixture via Acid Catalyzed Oximation Method of the Liquid-Liquid Extraction Experiment for the University of Florida Department of Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Unit Operations Laboratory Course

Purpose[edit]

To verify and/or modify the method of quantitative determination of acetone concentration in mixtures of water and butyl acetate.

Introduction[edit]

There has been significant concern raised as to the accuracy of the current titration method for determining the concentration of acetone present in samples collected for routine analysis by students while operating the liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) unit. These concerns are to be addressed by investigating the theoretical soundness as well as the practical utility of the current titration method. In addition, should any difficulty in practical evaluation or theory be encountered, several modifications of the current method and/or alternative quantitation methods may be explored.
